FAVOURITISM COULD BE A SOURCE OF CHALLENGES FOR A PERSON OR A LOCATION

Monday, 27th April 2026

DEFINITION

favouritism

/ˈfeɪv(ə)rɪtɪz(ə)m/

Favouritism is the unfair practice of giving preferential treatment, advantages, or special attention to one person or group over others based on personal connections, prejudices, or likes, rather than merit.

In my opinion, one of the easiest and surest ways to create challenges for a person or a location is by enforcing considerable favouritism without being able to effect that favouritism over the long term. This can create very real challenges for such a person or a location.

Favouritism makes people jealous and envious, some who may already be envious prior to the open display of favouritism. When a person is shown clear favouritism which some others may be as competent but not have such favour, it makes some people feel that the favour is unjust. This can be a very serious challenge when the source of the favouritism is no longer in a position to ensure the favouritism has no adverse impact on the very much favoured.

Some may say others favoured therefore some others can also favour their own person or people. However, what is the capability of each to impose favouritism in the long term? If one can impose favouritism only in the short term while the other can impose favouritism in the long term, then those who are beneficiaries of short-term favouritism could be victimised when the authority imposing favouritism on them is no longer in place. This could have consequences as serious as employment loss, ostracisation and, in very severe instances, lead to crimes against humanity against those who have been beneficiaries of favouritism.

The last instance has been proven over and over again by colonial administrations some of who showed favouritism to one population and did not and or could not maintain that after independence.

To avoid this, actions and opportunities should be merit-based and should not be based on race, religion, ethnicity, nationality or any other such consideration.

Any person and or location who or which is a beneficiary of clear favouritism while appreciating that should find out the entire genuine intent of those responsible for imposing the favouritism. Such a person or location should also insist on merit to ensure they remain relevant even if there is a time when they don't have the benefit of favouritism. This is very important.

Those who are not so much beneficiaries of the current favouritism as compared with the past, but who have been long-time beneficiaries of favouritism should legally and accurately determine if there is an intentional effort to provoke them and cause them to seek to disadvantage the current beneficiaries of favouritism? They should also legally and accurately determine whether this is intended to be leveraged to create a pretext to disadvantage them if they first disadvantage the currently favoured at some point in time.

This is very important to legally and accurately determine in order to protect the current and former beneficiaries of favouritism from entrapment.
